Caffe Lena (47 Phila St. Saratoga Springs, NY)
$10.00 (Advance) // $12.00 (Day of Show)
Backed by a small group of musicians, Carefully will unveil many of the soundtrack's acoustic-based compositions, performing in Caffe Lena's unparalleled listening atmosphere and share stories about the inspiration behind writing the pieces.
Nate Simms, local filmmaker and creator of Brunswick, chose Caefully to write the music for his film, which is ripe with lush images of the rural community. Carefully's talent for creating emotive, memorable melodies is evident throughout the film as viewers take in an intimate and compelling story about farmers, their land and local politics.
The soundtrack's recording process began in 2007 and took place in-between tours with The Kamikaze Hearts, as well as Carefully's own solo touring endeavors. As scenes were added to the movie, Carefully composed guitar instrumentals to fit and then fleshed them out with his wide array of acoustic instruments, including banjo, mandolin, octave mandolin and dobro.
While mostly instrumental, the soundtrack includes a few songs with lyrics, most notably "Walks With Purpose," a bluegrass/gospel tribute to those who follow an innate working path and sense of duty. Carefully is joined by vocalist Katie Hammon who lends her plaintive, gorgeous voice to two songs on the soundtrack.
Sharing the bill at Caff Lena will be young folkgrass upstarts Bailiwick (who are also playing with Way Yes on 12/9), Skidmore students who have shown much promise and ability early on in their career performing together. Finding a more well-rounded night of folk and acoustic music in the area would prove difficult. Tickets can be purchased here.
