The unlikely pairing of producer Danger Mouse, and Shins frontman James Mercer, makes for an awesome sound, even if their debut video for “The High Road” is a bit lackluster.

According to reports, producer-extraordinaire Brian Burton (best known by his stage name Danger Mouse) and James Mercer, the indie-rock MVP behind the well known group The Shins, met at a festival all the way back in 2004 and decided to do some work together. The project began in secrecy, but was brought to the surface when in the fall of 2009 they announced that a collaborative album was forthcoming, and was to be self-titled, Broken Bells. On March 9th of this year, the record dropped, and so far has been very well received critically. The first single off of the album, “The High Road” was put out in the last week of 2009, and only now has the official video been released.

The clip for “The High Road” is a pretty standard one, a simple in-studio filming, where we see James on the mic and strumming a guitar, Brian Burton banging away oh-so-perfectly on the drums, and a litany of others playing a variety of instruments. The director of this musical short, is one Matt Amato, a director with an impressive resume that includes videos he’s done with the likes of Beach House, Bon Iver, The Dodos and, The Bowerbirds. All in all, it’s a little disappointing that a duo such as these two, who seem as if they should be a pool, overflowing with creativity, couldn’t do something a little more interesting for a video, but the music truly does speak for itself in this case.

As luck would have it, Broken Bells has released another video and dipped into that pool of creativity, shown below.
