Followers of folk would argue that the genre's potency and place in 21st century music has never faded, thus requiring no argument. However, you certainly can argue that no matter how much the genre may have dipped in popularity contests in the last few decades, the last couple of years have seen a surge of talent which is breathing fresh air into the corduroy trousers of folk. Artists like Devendra Banhart, Frightened Rabbit, and today's topic of discussion, Bowerbirds, are all contributing and making folk music, well, cool again really.
After the 2009 release of the Bowerbirds second LP, Upper Air, more of a focus has been strained on the North Carolina three-piece, and with a new decade unfolding, that focus is now centered on the band's new single, "Northern Lights," available through Dead Oceans Records.
The video for the single, which is available for your viewing pleasure below, is directed by Matt Amato, a director who seems to be cropping up on our Video Roundups rather frequently. The short features an elegant band performance set amongst nature, log cabins and countryside. Amato's sharp scenes which shift from his previous grainy effect driven Beach House short, plant some edgy punches and perfumes the music with all things folk: the sense of togetherness, scuffed wooden instruments that beg to tell stories, and our old friend mother nature all make guest appearances.
