If you have ever experienced a dream within a dream within a dream and so on, that blurry divide is a close approximation for Gardens & Villa’s dreamy indie rock release, Music For Dogs. From track to track, you will feel stuck inside the fuzziness of a reality that does not quite feel like it is truly there. Where one track ends, the next one blends in seamlessly. Music For Dogs sleepwalks from one realm to the next and hardly seems to break free from the hold of its collective slumber from start to finish.

Music For Dogs infuses electro stylings to complement a rock base that becomes hypnotic. Gardens & Villa are careful not to go off on a bad trip with this new record. Music For Dogs does its best not to flood your sense, and instead lets your imagination do the heavy lifting.

Down the vortex into Gardens & Villa’s dimension of electro pop rock we go with the intense induction by “Maximize Results.” A fast charging, tense bout of chirpy chords is as aggressive as Gardens & Villa gets, which serves as an expressway to the larger dreamscape that unfolds later on. The longer it goes on, this track builds momentum in all facets, including increasingly exasperated vocals by singer Chris Lynch. From there, “Fixations” begins the standard of poppy electro rock that Gardens & Villa strives for. It becomes more of what “Maximize Results” is except it is more psych-ish behind a purposeful, driving piano that slows everything down on the heels of “Maximize Results” and its freneticism. And “Everybody” is workmanlike, escaping into a realm of turning gears and sprockets for some inexplicable reason. The drums and piano keep things humming along in this sonic representation of the opening credits of Doctor Who.

Gardens & Villa create a web of dreamy melodies on Music For Dogs. Largely, the listener feels lost in a sea of fuzzy dreams. There is still a lofty feeling to the most down tempo tracks on the record but you still feel as if it is keeping your expectations down. Still, Music For Dogs exceeds all of it to become one complete album.
