The Rapture's "DJ" album K7 Tapes is where remixing meets quality and says, "See ya!" Individually, many of these unknown disco/funk tracks are fine, but I'm left wondering whether or not the quality could have been better. Many of these tracks sound like they were directly ripped from your Mother’s old 8-tracks, and the remixes aren't exactly what you’d call special.

Whereas funky duo Chromeo succeeds at updating sound, The Rapture seems to stumble over nostalgia and become caught up with bringing back forgotten non-hits from the grave. The idea of bringing back underground disco and funk is one that I have a lot of respect for; however, not if I practically hear the dust impacting the music. Any remixing actually done to these tracks would have fit in very well in 1998, but sadly, to be progressive, one must always be living in the present and thinking towards the future. If you can remember sitting in your friend's car feeling the bass to your rave mixtape, then there's something to be said for this release, which, rather than a DJ album, comes across as a dollar-store compilation. All of your favorite, forgotten effects are here: piano break; fairlight; and the ever-popular Ace of Base-baseline.

Next to any mid-nineties remix album or club release, K7 Tapes would be pulverized through the light-up dance floor, whooped outside the club and back into the vinyl crate it belongs. And the one thing that bothers me the most, this album is comprised of many 1960s/70s tracks. So, technically, The Rapture has updated the sound of these songs, but maybe he shouldn't have dropped them in 1996.
