We sure hope that's the law section of the library where Vampire Weekend are sitting in the picture above, because they might need some thorough knowledge of the judicial system...and soon. The New York based kings of indie rock are being sued by Kirsten Kennis for a staggering $2 million. As it turns out--or at least as Kennis is claiming--the photo of her, which is the cover for the band's latest LP, Contra was not given to the band by her permission. Instead, Ken Brody, the photographer who took it back in 1983, gave Vampire Weekend clearance to use the photo. Well, in addition to the band, Brody is also being sued. Read on for more info.

Given Vampire Weekend's near universally-adored status and undeniable popularity, they managed to get clearance for the picture. However, Kennis is claiming that someone forged her signature on the release, and is now scrutinizing the band's failure to check into the legitimacy of the photographic release. Yesterday, the model filed a lawsuit in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. The group's record label, XL, has given a very brief--albeit to the point--press statement. It reads as follows:

"As is standard practice, Vampire Weekend and XL Recordings licensed the rights to use the photo on the cover of Contra pursuant to a license agreement that contains representations and warranties authorizing this use of the photo. Now that a lawsuit has been filed, we look forward to having the matter resolved in Court. We will be filing our response after we have had an opportunity to review the allegations. Consistent with our practice, we will not be commenting further about the pending litigation at this time."

Now, if all this talk of court, law and legal ramblings have you feeling low, the MP3 down below might just change that. We have "All Summer", a track created by Kid Cudi, Best Coast and VW's Rostam Batmanglij. It's sure to brighten up any day, including one clouded by million-dollar lawsuits involving your favorite preppy indie band.

Rest assured, as more details about this "legal" dispute are known, Inyourspeakers will have the details for you first. Oh, and just in case you haven't seen it, here is the cover in contention:
