Who’s brilliant? Eilen (pronounced “EE-lin”) Jewell, that’s who! While Jewell is more of a quirky country tinged, '60s rock/bluesy artist, she gets her Billie Holiday shine on in “Only One”. She stacks up favorably to the rash of modern jazz songstresses such as Lucy Woodward, Diana Krall, and Melody Gardot.
This smoky, sexy, seductive charmer is anthemic to anyone who’s wanted someone. “Only One” has an interesting history. It’s a song that almost wasn’t – at least not on an album; Jewell abandoned the song after it was written. Jewell clarifies, "I think of it as the little song that could. I wrote it a while ago and instantly threw it away. When it came time to record the new album, I discovered it accidentally in a notebook and decided to give it a try with the band, thinking there was no chance it would sound like anything. When I heard what they added to it I almost cried.” Lucky for us!
“Only One” will be a shiny star in the crown of the Queen of the Minor Key, the new album due out June 28 from label Signature Sounds. This will be her sixth album since her 2005 debut. Jewell grew up in Boise, ID, but got her start by performing at farmers' markets and local bars in Santa Fe, NM. She left for the not-quite-as-nice streets of Venice Beach, but thankfully she eventually landed in Massachusetts where her first album was recorded. If you’ve never seen this dynamic artist live, check her out the next time you have the chance for a terrific show.
