Yesterday Diplo posted this remix of Sleigh Bells' "Tell 'Em" and hinted at a possible collaboration between the two and Beyonce for her forthcoming record. Details...
Sleigh Bells scored big last year with their debut, Treats, a sample-heavy barrage of razor-sharp guitars and fuzzy, intoxicating harmonies. Or as Diplo put it on his blog, "one of the sickest of '10 .. its soo sick, its gave me a stomach ache .. half lyrnyrd skinnard half bangladesh half man half alligator." He's saying what we're all thinking.
"Tell 'Em" gets the Diplo treatment on this remix, selectively pruning instruments and structures while keeping the song pretty much intact. Sleigh Bells' songs are ripe for remixing; their structures are rigidly rhythmic with well-defined choruses and verses that provide the remixer with a blueprint of the song, who can then map out what parts of the song stay and which parts get tweaked. Diplo's version is pretty sick, he takes the frenetic energy of the original and manages to pace it throughout the song, all while enflaming the track with the dynamic, aggressive instruments we've come to expect from him. As for the Beyonce thing...
"me and switch was in studio in nyc tryin to make tracks with derek and beyonce last week after we played her team their album .. dunno if we gonna manage to finish but was good times."
Word is that Beyonce is getting down with indie acts in order to infuse her fourth album with some unexpected influences. Last year, her and Jay-Z (a rapper) showed up at a Grizzly Bear show in Brooklyn and it caught headlines on numerous bloggins. Don't know what a Beyonce/Sleigh Bells/Diplo collaboration would sound like, but I'm all for it. More on that when it's out there.
