The song "I Bought a Sex Pistols V-Neck at JC Penny" is a pretty biting (and catchy) critique of how consumerism has overcome the rebellion of PUNK. It’s a shame that NO BACKSIES don’t have more teeth to their music.
You can download the short burst of musical something-or-other It’s Not A Joke Band, It’s A Joke Culture for free off NO BACKSIES' bandcamp. Unfortunately, "Sex Pistols V-Neck" is the only track that feels complete, with every other song coming off as half-baked. It looks like all the creativity went into thinking up clever song-titles, with nothing left over for lyrics. Like that song title? Well, they’re going to repeat it a couple times and the song will be over.
"Sex Pistols V-Neck" gives the impression that NO BACKSIES could be a version of the The Dead Milkmen for the indie-hipster-modern-yuppie-bullshit culture of today, but you can’t take the piss out of something that isn’t sincere in the first place. The band’s attitude is expressed clearly in the It's Not a Joke Band It's a Joke Culture that contemporary punk's culture is no more than a joke. How can you make fun of something that is not even meant to be taken seriously?
That said, haven’t we turned the corner where half-assed bits of minimal effort get lauded as the new thing? Isn’t the age where the fashion of posers doing shit for insincere reasons is finally dead and over? Are NO BACKSIES a few years too late? or a few years AHEAD OF THEIR TIME? You decide.
