Priestbird is a Mexican psychedelic rock band out of New York. What I was expecting was a spacey, aura-cleansing journey into a mind filled with floating unicorns and bong resin. Instead, I got a cruise missile right to my sternum.
I do not know where the “psychedelic” connotation came from for Priestbird. “Diamond”, the first single from their upcoming album Beachcombers, is a four minute and sixteen second collage of spooky tracks, vicious drums and guitar licks. It is almost as if this single had murderous intent. After listening to it four or five times, I felt like putting on a multi-colored jogging suit and whacking out a few mob bosses. If Priestbird are looking for a hostile takeover of the indie rock scene, “Diamond” might be just enough to scare the shit out of anyone absent-minded enough to stand in their way.
When I hear the word “psychedelic”, I think of bearded men and sometimes-bearded women in a big naked heap wanting all of us to give peace a chance. The least I expect is a single that provides enough ambiance to encourage me to light up some incense. If “Diamond” is meant to be classified as “psychedelic”, then peace was never given a chance. It was given an offer it couldn’t refuse.
