Posted on both MGMT’s official website and their MySpace page--before its deletion--was the following statement: "Audio recording is allowed at shows. In each venue there will be a taping section. You must record the show from this section and not outside of it. This section in most situations will be located by the soundboard. In reserved seating and other unique situations you will be asked to keep your microphones at head level." But for all of you that already started charging your flip, don’t get too excited just yet. The elusive posts that continue to elude us contain a no-video clause: "There is no special taper ticket needed. We do NOT allow videotaping; only audio."
This simple statement, however, has become a rather complex conundrum among MGMT enthusiasts. Both posts were deleted soon after, like Lady Macbeth attempting to wash the blood off her hands—the deed has been done; some things you just cannot undo.
This post-and-delete tactic could turn out to be an official leak. You know, with MGMT playing telephone, hush-hush texts circulating among fans, and ultimately, a distortion of actual intent. MGMT could inadvertently be creating a secret society of hipsters, who will be holding audio equipment at shows, behind the line, in front of the stage, and for what? To post some crummy, lo-fi MGMT live cuts? Someone should probably tell these guys that secrets don’t make friends. Dependent on the band’s ability to actually sound the same live as they do on a studio album, this scheme could work. Our biggest question is actually not whether one can still record at the show, but rather, what can one do with the recording?
MGMT knows all about legality within the music industry. In 2009 they were entangled in a legal battle with the president of France over what their lawyer states was “counterfeiting”. Although their motives are still unclear, they have shows lined up through the end of the year. If you plan on attending, keep an eye out for the “taping section” and let us all know whether or not audio recording is still allowed. We would genuinely appreciate it, but please resist from posting the answer on your blog and then deleting it soon after. That could be classified as “pulling a MGMT,” which is destined to be the catch phrase of the year.
