Once upon a time Kathryn Calder was only a part-time member of The New Pornographers, initially making fans uneasy as she temporarily took the place of Neko Case. It didn’t take long, however, for Calder to gain the trust of her fellow bandmates, but perhaps more importantly, captivating the hearts of The New Pornographers' fanbase. Besides The New Pornographers, Calder also is an important member of Immaculate Machines.
Now, some three years later, Calder is striking out with her own solo album - one that we are especially looking forward to this year. While she has contributed to many collaborations, this is the first time she has worked on her songs from start to finish without any exterior influences. The album, Are You My Mother, is set for an August 11 release. Calder has gifted us with one track, "Slip Away," from her upcoming full-length, and it definitely heightens the anticipation. The track alone displays Calder's credibility and ability as an independent musician, and makes an even stronger case for her efforts when paired with her lovely vocals and timeless sound.
While the album is her solo work, her bandmates are helping her on her way, too. Neko Case guests on the album, alongside fellow New Pornographers members Kurt Dahle and Todd Fancey. Members of Ladyhawk and Frog Eyes also make appearances. Check out the track list below, and catch "Slip Away" down below. Here's to hoping it tides you over until August!
