Boston’s own Emil & Friends (really just Emil and whoever he can coax into contributing) describes his sound as “danceable weirdpop.” Whatever it is, it’s quite good. At 23 years old, “production-wizard/musician” Hewitt would show up to a guitar lesson with a produced track on CD, but no guitar. And, to a DJ gig with just his guitar. Some found that odd.
The genie was out of the bottle when Emil discovered multitrack recording, allowing him to concentrate on creating a foundation for sound and the deliciousness that followed. Emil’s sound varies. On tracks like “Cheap Imitations” (unreleased as of yet) the sound is heavy on acoustic guitar, with trembled up electro-industrial twinkles overlaid. On "Short Order Cooks" – quickly becoming one of my favorite playlist tracks – he sounds like old school Style Council, but on “Josephine” it’s a 70’s disco robot vibe – cleverly done and with GREAT lyrics. “Girlfriend on Girlfriend” is a mash-up of Michael Jackson’s and Phoenix’s songs by the same name. “Downed Economy” is an odd mix of TomTomClub and funky disco.
“Short Order Cooks,” “Downed Economy,”and “Josephine” can be found on Emil’s August EP Downed Economy, which was “inspired by the hunt for lost relatives, cures for heart conditions, obsessive letter writing, snacks, and hot trax.” The disc is an insanely good concoction of funk, disco, slinky guitar, well done electronic pop with great vocals and better lyrics.
We’ve left you with some tracks and an outstanding video for the song “Short Order Cooks” below. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Everything a video should be . . . GREAT song, clever concept, people having fun, tongue in cheeky, fun with computer graphics, interest randomness. LOVE.
