You can easily create a playlist from just today’s free music! Now that we at IYS have heard The Sea of Cortez, not an Airplane, Wartime Blues, we thought we just had to share these audio treats with you. We also have a Smashing Pumpkins cover from Passion Pit, a remix of Bear in Heaven from The Field, and lil’ Yeasayer remix to lift your spirits.

The Sea of Cortez
Like the rising of the tide, “The Shores” progresses from a gentle presence into an energetic layering of choruses and accompaniment before tapering off again. One listen and you can see that this band has a different view than many other music artists. And why wouldn’t they? The group is comprised of a biologist, photographer, and DJ. After creating their own studio in LA, we are seeing the product soon enough. Make It Sound comes out this year.

Passion Pit
In an almost unrecognizable version of Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight, Tonight” comes the source of Passion Pit’s, well, passion. For Levi’s Pioneer Sessions, Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos chose the song to exemplify his inspiration in the music world. The only connections, however, between this version and the original are the lyrics and a high-pitched voice to sing them. It is a magical and progressive move from the Pumpkins’ angst. More info here.

Bear in Heaven
If you liked Bear in Heaven’s LP Beast Rest Forth Mouth released last year, you’ll be doubly happy with their double remix album coming out on September 14th! They were so pleased with the first album that the band will be releasing the double album as a package of Beast Rest Forth Mouth with an extra CD of a remix of each song, featuring Studio, Twin Shadow, Deru and more! Below, we have The Field’s rad remix of “Ultimate Satisfaction.”

not an Airplane
One of the best, and most appropriate, captions on a music Myspace can be found on not an Airplane’s saying simply “You can’t un-listen to it.” The soul-baring vocals and simplistic country accompaniment of “Trains” will have you longing for anyone you haven’t seen in more than a week. Sadly, the band is sticking close to home on the west coast of the US for their summer tour, but if you can make it out there, or live close by, you’re in for a treat.

Wartime Blues
Americana and folk rock live boldly like legacies through Wartime Blues’ “Robert Ford and Jesse James.” The eight-piece band from Montana began playing together because of their bond over the love of grassroots music. Though they have been playing at random venues, anywhere from open-mic nights to backyard gathering, since 2006, they are only now releasing their debut album. Doves and Drums will come out later this year.

Yeasayer
“O.N.E.” is from Yeasayer’s Odd Blood, which was released earlier this year. Music blog Mad Descent perked our interest when it had a contest among its readers to see who could create the best Yeasayer remix. We already love Yeasayer, so we couldn’t resist checking it out. Makrophone’s remix is an intriguing blend of beat, Asian influence, and Yeasayer’s characteristic vocals.
