One of the nine treats we have for you today is Moondoggies. This is a band you will want to share with your dog, friends, and country-lovin’ parents. We also have new tracks and covers from André 3000, The Morning Benders, and Dirty Projectors, among others. Read after the jump to grab your M3s and catch a few videos.
Moondoggies
It seems only appropriate that the ancient, yet timeless, Moondoggies' sound was born in Alaska “in a dusty attic with an acoustic guitar and four-track recorder.” The four gifted musicians started making music when they were only teenagers and produce an incredibly weathered sound that you only expect from a seasoned life. “Fly Mama Fly,” like much of their music, speaks of travel, though they stick pretty close to their Seattle home outside of touring.
Carissa’s Wierd
We told you that Carissa’s Wierd would be lurking around for the promotion of their best of album They'll Only Miss You When You Leave: Songs 1996-2003. Well, they proved us right by announcing the release of an exclusive 7” pink vinyl with the first 50 pre-orders. On the vinyl, “Die” features longing lyrics framed by an involved accompaniment. As the harmonies weave in and out, you’ll find yourself wondering what inspired the song written so many years ago. “Diggin’ A Hole” will be on the b-side.
Drivan
From Stockholms län, Sweden, Drivan produces simple and subdued music. They are brand new to the music scene and we have a preview track before their debut album Disko comes out mid-August. The four-piece band is signed with Smalltown Supersound. “Kämpa” only builds suspense as the quick beat in the accompaniment leads you to believe the band wants nothing more than to break out the energetic vocals. Instead, it remains deliberately controlled.
Four Tet
Kieran Hebden of the UK is the man behind Four Tet. He layers sound on sound, weaving in a new element as another one fades, to produce a streamlined transition every time. From his last album There is Love in You, will come a new single. It will feature a Jon Hopkins and a Caribou remix (which we have for your listening pleasure) on 12” vinyl out July 19th in the UK and Europe and August 3rd in North America. In the meantime, catch him on tour at one of the many festivals this summer.
The Roots
After hearing the first track released off of upcoming album How I Got Over, we thought we’d keep our ears tuned for the next track off the collaboration album. From The Roots’ upcoming album, “Doin It Again” is wrought with a soulful hook from John Legend, piano, and the determined rap of The Roots. It seems they are going back to their formula of adding a little bit of flavor from different artists in every track.
The Morning Benders
After their debut LP Talking Through Tin Cans in 2008, the Berkley band has grown quite popular and still has potential to expand their following. Their latest tour with Broken Bells and The Black Keys will add two more popular indie bands to the growing list of tour mates. This meandering track is a remix of Big Echo’s “Cold War.” You can order the LP now.
Cloud Nothings
Though Turning On just came out within a year, Cloud Nothings is already releasing new music to follow up on their debut album. As Dylan Baldi promised, the new material does not have the same “I recorded this in my basement” sound as their LP. The Ohio-based band will come out with “Even If It Worked Out” as the b-side to 7″ Didn’t You on June 24th. There will only be 300, so you might want to pre-order at Old Flame now.
Dirty Projectors
Levi Strauss and Co.’s Pioneer Music Sessions snagged the Dirty Projectors for their latest track. They do a vocally rich version of Bob Dylan’s “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine” and you can’t deny how perfect the selection is for the Brooklyn-based band’s own style. If you want to catch them live, they have a few more dates on their tour for now, but will pick back up in the fall. You can hear the full track and watch a video of the creative process below.
André 3000
It’s really hard not to like Outcast’s André 3000. I mean you have to actually put time and effort into finding something that would justify any negative feelings toward the quirky rapper. His eccentric sense of style and flavorfully humorous lyrics are only a compliment to the man’s talent. So what would we have if Dre teamed up with The Beatles? A really fun commercial! Below is an advertisement for Kobe Bryant’s team The Lakers set to André 3000’s snippet version of "All Together Now" by The Beatles.
