Dag för Dag (Swedish for Day by Day) are the brother/sister duo of Jacob and Sarah Snavely, who seem to be from just about everywhere in the U.S. and a few points elsewhere. Their site says they were “born . . . on the wings of a warm wind swooping over the wild southwestern plains”, elsewhere less dramatically narrowed down to southern California, and lived in Missoula, MT, Wisconsin, Honolulu, and San Francisco, before settling down in Stockholm, Sweden and starting a band together. “I Am the Assassin” is the first single off of their upcoming Ceremony Recordings release Boo, set to be released on April 26.

The lyrics are crap, let’s just get that out of the way: “I ain’t no cat in a tree / I’m fancy free / Got my machete / I am the assassin”. I’d love to have taken that out of context, but it’s actually a little sillier in its proper place in the song, and besides, that’s the bulk of the lyrics right there. But try not to let the lyrics ruin what is otherwise a passable, even mildly enjoyable tune to play in the background while you do something else.

The drums and guitar simply but effectively propel the song through its two minute length, with brother Jacob’s high, airy vocal floating over cooly. It’s decent background music, even pretty at points, and you might really enjoy it if you can just keep from paying attention to the lyrics. Dag för Dag have got some potential as a chill-out soundtrack if they can get their lyrics above the writing level of mad libs.
