Dr. Dre is kicking off this Independence Day with the premiere of The Pharmacy, his hour long radio show hosted exclusively on Beats 1 Radio, owned by Apple Music.
Every other Saturday at 6pm EST (10pm GMT) the music mogul will take to the airwaves to discuss everything hip-hop. At the show's debut tonight the doctor will be joined by Wyann Vaughn, DJ Pooh and Eddie Francis.
The collaboration between Apple and Dr. Dre goes back to the purchase of Beats (both the streaming service and headphones) in May of last year. Apple's attempts to shoulder itself into the music streaming industry have been wildly successful, garnering the support of a myriad of artists, most famously Taylor Swift after her letter forced Apple to change their royalties policy during the free trial offer to consumers. While Apple Music has gained a lot of steam from artists concerned about the changing music industry, Apple's methods and strategies have been criticized by industry analysts and music consumers alike.
Despite the controversy surrounding Apple, Dr. Dre is one of many celebrities who will be hosting or appearing on shows on Apple Music. Other names include Drake, Ellie Goulding and Pharrel. For long time Dre fans, Apple will be streaming The Chronic, the artist's 1992 debut album that propelled him to fame when it hit number 3 on the Billboard 200. The album is currently unavailable on any other streaming service.
