SoundCloud recently struck a deal with international music rights agency Merlin, which will give the streaming service legal access to the material of 20,000 indie labels and distributors.

As a result of the negotiations, labels represented by Merlin such as Warp, Ninja Tune, PIAS, Beggars Group, Domino, Secretly Group, and Epitaph will now get paid royalties for every stream of their work, paid for by advertising.

“When we started SoundCloud in 2007, one of our chief priorities then, as it remains today, was championing independent artists,” SoundCloud said in a statement. “The indie community has always been at the heart of SoundCloud, and our deal with Merlin is another way for us to further support the independent community by opening a new source of revenue for them.”
