Superstar singer Akon has officially launched his new humanitarian project: to bring solar power to 600 million Africans.

As part of his Akon Lighting Africa initiative, Akon is opening a solar academy in Bamako, Mali to teach civilians how to set up and maintain solar-powered microgrids. Since Africa sees 320 days of sunshine per year, solar power is the ideal way for large amounts of people to obtain electricity.

The Akon Lighting Africa organization also hopes that this effort will create sustainable jobs and forward thinking individuals. "We expect the Africans who graduate from this center to devise new, innovative, technical solutions," co-founder Thione Niang stated. “With this Academy, we can capitalize on Akon Lighting Africa and go further.”
