Cage the Elephant have decided to forgo hiring a professional photographer for their upcoming North American tour.

Recently announced via the Cage the Elephant website, the band is offering one fan the chance to be the official photographer for the 2014 Cage the Elephant & Foals North tour. But what isn't clear is how the copyrights are going to work. Is the band claiming ownership over all published photos?

No offense to amateur photographers, but the photo pit is a restricted area for a reason--a certain sense of etiquette exists that amateurs may not be aware of. Professionals exist for a reason, and it doesn't help to be making their job cheap and accessible.

This stunt is controversial in the sense that Cage the Elephant might be looking for a way to have their pictures taken for free. And there are much easier ways to get fans involved, as evidenced by Felix Cartal's After Dark tour.

We'll have to wait and see if the band receives more backlash. In the meantime, support your local professional photographers.
