In the new video for “Choice Notes,” Alex Winston once again struts the line between childhood innocence and strong adult femininity, providing a charming and thoughtful visual accompaniment to a lovely track about personal fulfillment.
It’s a hallmark of an exceptional musicians to intertwine beauty and depth into the type of whimsical package that Ms. Winston has with this song and its video, filmed by Austin Peters. In a rather literal manner, the lyricist lifts her own spirits with notes of her choosing, and subsequently, effortlessly inspires feelings of high-spirited optimism in viewers/listeners.
Without resorting to the cheap ploy of overt sexuality that is so common in contemporary music videos, Winston opts instead for a sweet and visually sensual embodiment of her music. The camera follows the singer and her incredible voice through a sleepy town where she’s surrounded by images of carefree youthfulness. A young girl - pigtails, freckles, braces and all - jumps rope. A person donning a ghost costume made from a sheet dances after her with little feet poking outs. Confetti and sparklers burst around her, and at one point, house in the background is covered in rocking horses and stuffed animals. Later on in the video, Ms. Winston sits at a table in a bar only to be served milk with a paper umbrella by a matronly bartendress.
These images, paired with her classically trained yet unconventional voice, are reminiscent of a sunshiny version of a CocoRosie video (especially in the theme of sisterhood). We see this theme repeated in the title of Winston’s debut mini album Sister Wife on which “Choice Notes” shines as a main attraction. In an interview with So So Gay, an online LGBT advocacy periodical, the songstress reports that the title refers to the close relationship she has with her female back up singers, all of whom are longtime friends.
Aside from being a must-hear track from a commendable young musician, this video provides an instant cure for those mornings when you just don’t feel like being a productive member of society.
