If you’re of the ursine persuasion, caught somewhere between Care Bears and Grizzly Bear, SUNBEARS! are just the aural escape you’re looking for. The Jacksonville based electro pop duo consists of multi-instrumentalist and singer Jonathan Berlin combined with the thunderous cansmanship of Jared Bowers. Their 2009 album Dream Happy Dreams contained the sort of psychedelic bliss reminiscent of The Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots or the lighter moments of Animal Collective. Feeding off the glass half full mentality, they decided to release their single Give Love a Try for free. And after listening to it, you will probably want to hug someone, if not kiss them.

Unlike most “electro-pop” these days, this track immediately establishes a primal drumbeat, in all of its raw unmodulated glory. “It seems like everyone’s got to have something/The smallness of our brains is such/Can’t keep the big picture in our heads/The size of our minds ain’t much” are the introductory verses to a sprightly melody lightening the weight of these lofty thoughts. Just when the acoustic guitar becomes a bit repetitive, amplified bass plucking drops in along with some mellifluous chimes and bells. There’s nothing sarcastic or subversive about the lyrics, it’s all about love man. Here’s the official video shot in the streets of Jacksonville treated with some post-production grain.
