Our Ceasing Voice

Wet pavements, windy nights and dreamscapes filled with all the things you love…and all the things you’re afraid of. That’s what you get when you’re listening to Austria’s Our Ceasing Voice. Nominally given the title of ‘experimental’ or ‘ambient’ the band’s music actually is harder to classify than that. Lumped under the 'post-rock' lable they disregard those rules too and make their own poignant version of something that just sounds like…OCV.

Listening to any of OCV’s music it’s easy to draw comparisons and guess at influences of the band. Pink Floyd comes to mind in an instant. Or perhaps Swans because somewhat like Team Gira, OCV produces dark, moody, thought provoking music that pulls the listener along in a sweeping wave and then jabs a finger in their eye—just to make sure they’re still paying attention.

The four piece band started crafting their “journey through the mystery of gloom” in Austria in 2006. On their first EP release, Steadied Stars in the Morphium Sky, OCV were clearly out to prove that they weren’t just another ambient noise band that follows the often singular, formulaic track of other acts in their genre. With songs that reach at and over nine minutes it’s a darn good thing the guys seem to really know what they want and where they’re heading. It saves the longer tracks from becoming boring. For Morphium they had a vision of what they wanted to sound like and what they wanted listeners to hear and they followed that path unfailingly.

Since then OCV have released a number of singles, EPs and participated on a number of compilation releases. In February 2011 they released the epic full length When the Headline Hit Home. The album was based on a novel by the band’s guitarist Sebastian and was met with acclaim and praise. Next up, OCV releases 7” split with post metal band Satory (also from Vienna) that will be available on vinyl or download only as of November 1st. OCV’s contribution to the release, “For Darkness Fears the Light”, is a drum heavy, dark vocal run through the night that is completely in keeping with the band’s well crafted ‘selective gloom’ they’re quickly becoming known for. Four more tracks available when you go to download, including two tracks where Satory and OCV combine forces.

Listening to Our Ceasing Voice’s music you get the feeling that you aren’t just listening to OCV but instead you are doing exactly what the band wanted…experiencing the music. And you’re doing it under the carefully crafted path they’ve built for you to follow.
