With his second full length release Planet High School, Mux Mool, a.k.a. electronic artist Brian Lindgren, is back in the spotlight with his unique and genre defying sound.
Transplanted to Brooklyn, originally from Minnesota, Mux Mool has been sampling and playing with sound in unique and interesting ways. The wide range he’s shown from his remixes to his original work is one of the things that make Lindgren hard to pin down. Loosely classified as everything from electo-hop to dance to glitch-groove, one thing Lindgren always brings is an engaging beat and a sense that something big is about to drop.
Listening to his work there are so many influences that you can almost hear. Tangerine Dream, French inspired house, more than a splash of 80s hip hop and rhythm. But none blatantly stands out as a single thread; which is part of what keeps Mux Mool so freaking compelling.
Of course it’s easy to say his beats are heavy, edgy and rich; sometimes jarring and sometimes smooth. But that can be said about a lot of artists out there today doing similar work in similar genres. It’s the way Lindgren handles every piece he works on with a palpable confidence, particularly on his latest release; the way he wraps sound up, splits it apart then pulls it all back together to construct complex, compelling tracks that get caught in the loop in your head. That's what makes of Mux Mool really stands out in the crowded electronic beats field as more than just another producer. As someone who feels the music, understands the source and knows exactly what he is…even if there isn’t any obligatory, ready-made label for him.
