San Francisco indie rockers Girls are back with “Vomit,” the first single from their upcoming album Father, Son, Holy Ghost due out this fall.

First played on Seattle’s KEXP, the band’s label, True Panther, has since released it on its website along with tour dates and album information. Warning: “Vomit” is not a song for the recently heartbroken.

In the words of True Panther, “Vomit” is a “juxtaposition of pain and beauty—hope and misery” and was one of the first Girls songs singer Christopher Owens ever wrote.

“Vomit” sounds a bit like Sonic Youth with a slow, acoustic start with a definite melancholy mood. The sadness and heartbreak of the song is palpable enough through the music alone, even with subtleties like an organ.

Some moments do break the tone and become more explosive, with a heavier sound thanks to electric guitars a bit reminiscent of grunge. At one point we get a full tempo shift—with sounds more along the lines of Pink Floyd or 70s acid rock—and along with it new, almost hopeful lyrics, most notably the repeated line, “Come into my heart.” The organ comes in stronger here, and as the song comes to an end, a gospel choir kicks in to give “Vomit” a more grand, ambitious sound. No matter the shifts, Owens’ vocals remain soft and steady throughout.

The lyrics are repetitive, which reinforces the melancholy, especially with the repeated lines “Nights I spend alone / I spend alone looking for you, baby” and “looking for love.”

Father, Son, Holy Ghost will be out Sept. 13 here in the states, Sept. 12 in the UK and Sept. 7 in Japan but is available for pre-order now. Until its release, you need to check out “Vomit” below.
