Bleeding Edge: Bodies of Water
Music Player:

Bodies of Water has somehow managed to make music that sounds nostalgic and modern at the same time—drawing comparisons to everything from Arcade Fire to Fleetwood Mac—but all with their own distinct sound.

The core of the Los Angeles group is married couple David and Meredith Metcalf, whose voices help to create a polarizing dynamic on their third album, Twist Again. Both are steady and smooth, but Meredith’s is light and sweet while David’s is dark with similarities to Lou Reed, especially on “My Hip Won’t Let Me.” Combined with their intimacy and emotion, the result is an album that sounds like an extended conversation between two lovers, and the rest of us are just eavesdropping.

The juxtaposition of light and dark doesn’t come just from David and Meredith’s voices, but also from the music. While Twist Again starts fast and fun, the tone gets darker as it progresses, adding to the emotion. The songs slow down and David’s crooning voice takes over, giving us haunting songs like “New Age Nightmare.”

Similar to its span of moods, Twist Again is also full of sounds and influences that span times and genres. Those early fast, fun songs are filled with the same whimsy as acts like She and Him, while the melancholy ballads take on the feel of post-punk bands like Echo and the Bunnymen. “Triplets” and “Ever With Us” have 60s pop vibes, and the frequent use of horns, especially on “Open Rhythms” and “Lights Out Forever”, give hints of blues and jazz.

For a little while, Twist Again was available as a free download, but that time has passed. However, the album can still be streamed on Bodies of Water’s website and purchased if you like what you hear.
