Jay Reatard's untimely demise at his Memphis, TX home early this year sparked some heavy rumors in light of the events in the punk rocker's life and career leading up to it. Early (later discredited) reports suggested the possibility of foul play in the singer's passing. Recent attacks on Reatard's person in concert and the abrupt departure of his former touring band last year both led credibility to the claim. In the end though, however many enemies Jay Reatard may have accumulated by the time of his death, none proved to be more lethal than Reatard himself, according to the official autopsy report.
According to Shelby County Medical Examiner Dr. Karen E. Chancellor, Reatard death was due to "cocaine toxicity," also noting "that alcohol was a contributing factor in his death." He was only 29 years old. After a January 16th memorial service, the singer was buried the following day, and now shares a cemetery with the late Isaac Hayes.
Rest in peace, dude.
