Fruit Bats impresario Eric Johnson has recently seen some error in his ways - specifically in how he has been approaching live shows. “I think my perspective on playing got fuzzy at some point,” he said in a 2008 interview with Bandega. “I was going for a 'let the songs speak for themselves' theory. Which is totally admirable, but doesn't always work in a live context.” Recalling a Def Leppard show accoutered with rotating outer space stages, lasers and bared breasts, Johnson stated “I'm lately trying to return to the mindset I had when I was starting out as a kid – be entertaining, take the concertgoers on a journey, turn the songs into whatever they need to be.”

In light of this, we're hoping that Johnson and crew will adopt some of the tenants of this rediscovered philosophy this year, as they tour in support of their latest album The Ruminant Band. Although the band plans to temper their venue dates with stripped down acoustic in-store shows, Johnson plans to maintain a high energy level, forum notwithstanding. “We’re gonna put together a super ripping sit on the floor acoustic hoedown jam for these instores, complete with dobros and banjos and stuff.” During their quite extensive tour, Fruit Bats will be playing with a revolving line-up of opening acts, including fellow folk-enthusiasts Death Vessel, Dante DeCaro (fronted Johnny & The Moon), Pronto and Kevin Barker and Iran (one of the many bands which call TV On The Radio's Kyp Malone a member). Check out the dates after the jump.
