From the depths of Sweden, the band The Knife has made their name known with their distinct styles in both beats and vocals. Now, the lead singer, Karin Dreijer Andersson, has initiated a solo project, Fever Ray. Her self-titled debut album reflects her talents as heard in The Knife, but with a twist to her very organic and psychedelic style.
This ten-track album starts out with a powerful instrumental track, “If I Had A Heart.” With a tribal-type feel, the organic but simple rhythm intertwines harmoniously with Andersson’s robust vocals. It is a perfect introduction to the album, indicating the experimentation and knack Andersson has for making eccentric yet beautifully organized music.
Now we all know that The Knife certainly uses distinctive peculiar beats and noises with almost unrivaled creativity. The almost eerie feel inherent in each track defines the border between The Knife and any other electronic band. Now with Andersson's Fever Ray project, she recreates a similar feeling. With atypical pulses and alternating currents, she represents both her own and the name of The Knife proudly. With tracks such as “Seven,” I couldn't help but compare this sound to the tracks originally produced by the duo.
Another distinctive characteristic of Andersson’s music is her unique voice. She can easily shift from a very shallow and shrill pitch to grave sonorous tones; she creates a different outlook for every song with the way she chants. Andersson’s use of echoes and harmony in many cases, such as in “I'm Not Done,” generates a novel dimension in her music. This is especially notable when Andersson varnishes her tracks with piercing and resonant vocals.
When it comes down to it, Fever Ray is essentially a continuation of Andersson’s work with her main band For those of you who are fans of The Knife, I have good news: you don't have to keep Silent Shout on repeat anymore. Just throw this album on and press play. Not only will you get the full satisfaction of listening to some new stuff by The Knife, but you will also get the extra benefit of hearing what Karin Dreijer Andersson can come up with on her own.
